BJP Prepares for Rajya Sabha Elections

Guwahati, June 5: The Assam unit of the BJP has gathered 13 nomination applications for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, which will fill two seats from the state. These applications have been forwarded to the party's national president, JP Nadda, for further evaluation.


The elections for the two Rajya Sabha seats are scheduled for June 19, coinciding with the end of the current terms for members Mission Ranjan Das (BJP) and Birendra Prasad Baishya (AGP) on June 14.


According to the seat-sharing agreement among the NDA partners, both the BJP and AGP will contest one seat each in the upcoming elections.


A meeting of the BJP's State Election Committee took place on Tuesday evening, attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP president Dilip Saikia.


"The committee has received 13 applications for Rajya Sabha nominations, and after thorough discussions, it was decided to forward all names to the national president for consideration," stated a senior leader from the BJP.


Notable figures among the applicants include current MP Mission Ranjan Das, former Union Minister Rajen Gohain, ex-Lok Sabha members Queen Oja and Dr. Rajdeep Roy, as well as Dr. Sunita Changkakati, the former chairperson of the Assam State Child Welfare Commission.


Other candidates include BJP leaders Dr. Pradip Thakuria, Dr. Sanjib Goswami, Dr. Dayananda Borgohain, Dr. Vijay Kumar Gupta, Mridula Barkakati, Bhaskar Dahal, Kanad Purkayastha, and Biswarup Bhattacharjee.


The deadline for submitting nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections is June 9, with scrutiny scheduled for June 10. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 12.


Voting will occur from 9 AM to 4 PM on June 19, with vote counting set for 5 PM on the same day.
